Environmental Impact Assessment of an offshore Wave Energy Park in the region Pomos, Paphos

The project concerns a commercial pilot offshore Wave Energy Park with capacity of 240kW. Based on the operation and cost – benefit results of this pilot plant (energy production – financial costs) will be decided whether it is viable and feasible to future develop a Wave Energy Park with a total capacity up to 200MW. The Environmental Impact Assessment evaluated expected potential impacts to the environment during the installation and operation of the offshore unit and mitigation measures were proposed.

The Environmental Impact Assessment aimed to provide a high level of protection of the environment and to contribute to the integration of environmental considerations into the preparation of the project with a view to reduce its environmental impact. Expected potential impacts to the environment during the installation and operation of the offshore unit were assessed and mitigation measures were proposed.

At the same time the EIA dealt with the determination of the exact location of the off‐shore pilot plant, which could be used as a reference against the approved and available areas in the general Pomos area, which could accommodate the whole project in an environmentally safe and acceptable manner. Areas were eliminated that were environmentally sensitive or had a special interest by the locals either used for fishing or other recreational use in the sea region of Pomos.

The tasks that were successfully completed and the services that were provided were:

  • Analysis of the current condition of the natural environment of the area, focusing on aspects of marine environment
  • Analysis of the socioeconomic conditions of the area (population, economic activities, town planning, land use)
  • Proposal and environmental evaluation of different alternative solutions to the project
  • Evaluation and assessment of the potential environmental impacts that can arise during the project’s construction and operation
  • Formation and proposal of suitable mitigation measures to address the potential environmental impacts
  • Elaboration of monitoring plan to be implemented during the construction and operation of the project

The main services that are provided in this group of case studies are:

  • EIA management
  • Site surveys to evaluate current environmental conditions
  • Analysis and evaluation of the current environmental state (natural and manmade environment)
  • Proposal and environmental evaluation of different alternative solutions to the project
  • Analysis of the environmental impacts of the project
  • Proposal of mitigation measure
  • Stakeholder and public consultation
  • Presentation and client’s support with the competent authorities

In many cases in the context of the EIA for Photovoltaic Parks, there are other technical studies needed in order to support the project that were provided by I.A.CO, including:

  • Ecology (habitats and species)
  • Socio- economic issues
  • Land quality assessment
  • Cultural heritage (impact assessment)

All the above analyses are made using equipment, software and methodologies that are state of the art for each sector.

Environmental Impact Assessment of a Waste to Energy Plant of 13MWe capacity at Koshi, Larnaca
The project refers to the Environmental Impact Assessment of a Waste to Energy Plant of 13MW through the exploitation of secondary fuels.

Client: HELECTOR Cyprus subcontracted by ENVECO S.A. (Greece)

Region: Cyprus

Type: Environmental Impact Assessment, Renewable Energy, Waste & Pollution Management

Duration: 02/2012 – 04/2012

Other Partners: ENVECO S.A. (Greece)

The EIA study evaluated the development of an Electricity Production Unit through the exploitation of secondary fuels (RDF/ SRF/ organic fraction 0-130 mm) located within the existing installation of Integrated Management of Solid Household Wastes in Koshi, Larnaca. The proposed Waste to Energy Plant will be fully integrated into the existing installations of solid waste management and energy fuel production, since it will operate as a receptor of secondary fuels produced by the processing of municipal solid wastes in the region. At the same time, the power station will generate electricity that will be available for the National Energy Network.

The tasks that were successfully completed and the services that were provided were:

  • Analysis of the current condition of the natural environment of the area (topography, geology, hydrology/hydrogeology, seismicity, soils, meteorology, flora and fauna)
