I.A.CO has a team of in-house experts and specialized experienced associates, which have considerable experience in carrying out ecological surveys and assessments. The ecology team includes experts that are biologists, ornithologists, habitats, fauna and flora experts, zoologists, hydrologists, geologists and agronomists. All are very experienced in organizing and conducting field surveys, have a deep knowledge in their field of expertise and are very well acquainted with the European and national environmental legislation and regulations.

I.A.CO has experience in the elaboration of Management Plans for Protected Areas (Natura 2000), in the organisation and implementation of Ecological Baseline Studies and in the support of the statutory national bodies to implementation and comply with the EU legislation framework (mainly Habitats 92/43/EEC and Birds 2009/147/EC Directives).

In line with the above, I.A.CO’s ecology team is proficient in carrying out the appropriate assessments required under Article 6(3) and (4) of the habitats directive (92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora), required where a project or plan may give rise to significant effects upon a Natura 2000 site, both for those identified as Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) under the habitats directive or classified as Special Protection Areas (SPAs) under the Birds Directive 2009/147/EC.

In particular, ecological services provided by I.A.CO include:

  • Desk and field-based surveys to:
    • identify important habitats and species in an area,
    • to assess any potential issues and constraints for development sites and
    • indicate options and mitigations measures.
  • Evaluate the relation between the biotic environment and abiotic factors
  • Mapping of habitats and species ranges
  • Photographic documentation
  • Design and implement short and long term monitoring schemes for habitats and species

All the above surveys and analyses are made using equipment, software and methodologies that are state of the art in this sector.
