Environmental Impact Assessment Study for the Construction and Operation of the National Sport Center of Cyprus Football Association (CFA) in Kornos community

Client: Fereos + Associates Architects LLC

The new National Sport Center of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) will be constructed in the Community of Kornos in Larnaca District, on a plot with a total area of 145.845m2. The purpose of the project is to meet the needs of the National Football Teams, following the standards of similar sports centers of other European Federations. It will serve as a meeting and preparation point for national football players of all ages. The project will also include a central football field for international matches of the junior National Teams, with a capacity of 1,500 seats. Additionally, the project will feature 3 auxiliary training fields, a hostel for accommodating players and other support facilities (gym, medical room, physiotherapy room, locker rooms, etc.). Furthermore, a new building will be constructed on the site to house the central offices of the CFA, and the facility will be suitable for hosting seminars, conferences, and training programs for coaches and referees.

The main tasks that were successfully completed and the main services that were provided were:

  • Photographs shooting of the current situation of the study area
  • Analysis of the current condition of the natural environment of the area, focusing on aspects of physical environment
  • Detailed description of the proposed facilities
  • Proposal and environmental evaluation of different alternative solutions of the project.
  • Evaluation and assessment of the potential environmental impacts that could arise during the project’s construction and operation. The significant environmental impacts of the project were examined in relation to the characteristics and the location of the project. The analysis of the potential impacts was performed per environmental parameter (e.g. climate, morphology, water resources, population, etc.) both during the construction phase and the operation phase of the project.
  • Formation and proposal of suitable mitigation measures to address the potential environmental impacts. Most of the mitigation measures proposed, both for the construction and the operation phase of the project, are summed in a Construction Environmental Management Plan and a Health and Safety Plan during construction, and in an Environmental Management System during the operation of the project.
