Strategic Environmental Assessment and Special Ecological Assessment Study of the New Development Plan for Paralimni, Ayia Napa and Derynia

Client: Ministry of Interior – Town Planning and Housing Department

The aim of the project was to assess the significant environmental effects that are likely to result from the implementation of the New Development Plan for Paralimni, Ayia Napa and Derynia and to propose the appropriate mitigation measures.

As part of the project, a Special Ecological Assessment Study (SEAS) was also conducted regarding the impacts of the upcoming Local Plan, focusing on areas that fall within or are adjacent to the Natura 2000 network.

The tasks that were successfully completed and the services that were provided by I.A.CO were:

  • Analysis and description of the context and the objectives of the Plan, establishing the baseline and deciding on the scope.
  • Detailed description of the Plan with a focus on those aspects that have a potential environmental impact.
  • Analysis and presentation of the current situation in the relevant environmental fields, as well as of the trends and expected development.
  • Detailed assessment and evaluation of the significant environmental impacts of the Plan, taking into account the cumulative impacts.
  • Special Ecological Assessment Study of the potential impacts to the Natura 2000 network.
  • Identification and proposal of the appropriate mitigation measures in order to be incorporated into the Plan.
  • Formulation of an appropriate Monitoring Programme for the impacts and the effectiveness of the measures.
  • Presentation of the Environmental Study to the Environmental Authority.

The proposed Local Plan received a positive opinion from the Environmental Authority on 08/04/2024, which included specific environmental conditions that must be adhered during its implementation.
