The preparation of the National Nature Restoration Plan (NNRP) for the Republic of Cyprus has commenced, undertaken by the National Museum of Natural History / Hellenic Centre for Biotopes–Wetlands (NMNH/HCBW), ENVECO S.A. and I.A.CO Environmental and Water Consultants Ltd. The project is implemented within the framework of applying the European Regulation (EU) 2024/1991 on Nature Restoration and marks the beginning of a coordinated national effort to upgrade the country’s degraded ecosystems.

The project is funded by the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment through the “THALEIA 2021–2027” Programme, co-financed by the European Union, and has a duration of 28 months.

The European Regulation, which entered into force in August 2024, sets ambitious and binding targets: the restoration of at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea area by 2030 and of all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. The focus is on terrestrial and marine ecosystems, rivers, forests, agricultural and urban areas, as well as pollinators, which are critical for biodiversity and agricultural production.

The National Plan will be developed in cooperation with competent authorities and stakeholders and with the active participation of the society, within the framework of prescribed consultation actions. A draft of the NNRP must be submitted to the European Commission by 1 September 2026.

Nature restoration is an investment in the environment and in the quality of life for all of us.
