We are conducting a Study on behalf of the Cyprus Geological Survey Department, for the design of the appropriate works, aiming the preservation and promotion of the geo-heritage of “Agrokipia” mine.
The “Agrokipia” mine, which began its operation in 1936, was one of the most important copper mines of Cyprus. The mining activity in the area, formed the crater, in which quantities of water remain permanently, mainly due the stormwater during winter. Furthermore, due to the mining activities, valuable geological formations were revealed in the surface, indicating the various historical periods of mining – from the galleries to the open pit -, as well as sites of important geological interest for students, researchers and the public.
The Study includes topographical survey, hydrological and hydraulic study for the management of the stormwater, geotechnical study and slope stability analysis, as well as the design of the aforementioned works. The overall goal of the proposed works, is the inclusion of the “Agrokipia” mine into the “Troodos Geopark” as “Geosite”, contributing to the development of the geo-tourism of the island.
